“I have to paint. I see fish even in my dreams. A witch is always swimming beside me; when I turn, her head has become a fish. I have to paint what she becomes. It is like being thrown into the sea—whether I can swim or not, I have to reach the shore.”

Her voice trembled, as though she had just recited her life’s manifesto.

The force within her was like a fish, and painting was how she tamed it. In Fang's beaker, that force became fish mint and violet leaf—a scent that feels like swimming beside a witch.
